Mambo, the latin dance of Cuba is very similar to Salsa in the sense that both dances are based on the "Clave" beat.
EAST COAST SWING
East Coast Swing (ECS) traces its roots to the original swing dance Lindy Hop, that was tamed and simplified by dance schools to become ECS. ECS is a fun, upbeat dance, distinguished by its bounce, rock step and "swing hip action".
WEST COAST SWING
West Coast Swing (WCS) is smooth (no bounce) and danced in a slot. The dance allows room for syncopated footwork and improvisation. WCS can be danced to a wide range of music including rhythm and blues, country western, funk, disco, rock and pop making it one of the popular social dances.
The Hustle today mostly refers to the unique partner dance done in ballrooms and nightclubs to disco music. It has some features in common with swing dance. This dance makes another high energy and fun social dance.
Waltz is a smooth progressive dance characterized by long, flowing movements, continuous turns, and rise & fall. Graceful and elegant, Waltz dancers glide around the floor almost effortlessly. Waltz is slow tempo, but the expressive quality of the music often invites very powerful and dynamic movement.
Tango is a dramatic dance characterized by a close hold that is more compact than other smooth dances and a low center of gravity. Movement in Tango is stealthy, almost cat-like and has an unmistakable staccato feel.
Foxtrot is a smooth dance with gliding steps with controlled movement but an easy going look. Foxtrot can be danced to many styles of music: Social Foxtrot can be danced with a mild-bounce action, while Competitive Foxtrot has a smoother, more Waltz-like feeling.
V. Waltz is characterized by its speed (almost twice as fast as Waltz), as well as rise & fall and sway. With its elegance and turns, V.Waltz has an air of magic about it.
